It was on 5th June 1895 when the North Coast Fresh Food and Cold Storage Co-operative Company Limited central creamery at Byron Bay commenced operations with the first cream put into churns and the first butter made. At that point, the future was uncertain for the fledgling Co-operative, however the Directors and dairy farmers were resolute in their desire for the co-operative to succeed and their perseverance was eventually rewarded. In January 1904 the name of the Co-operative was changed to North Coast Co-operative Company Limited and finally on 8th January 1926 the name was changed to Norco Limited. From this time, the name Norco has been synonymous with quality.

The current Directors and Members of the Co-operative have never underestimated the sacrifices made by those associated with the Co-operative from the late 1800’s and right throughout Norco’s 120 year history in establishing a sustainable dairy industry on the Far North Coast of New South Wales. It is this link to the rich heritage, provenance and co-operative ethos that drives the current Norco business to succeed in the local, national and international markets, in many cases competing with multinational organisations.

Today Norco can proudly call itself an Australian, farmer owned dairy co-operative that has been in business since 1895. Norco currently has 330 Members on 220 supplying dairy farms across Northern New South Wales and South East Queensland that supply 220 million litres of quality fresh milk, 365 days a year. Total revenue for the Co-operative was $510 million last financial year and staff numbers total 760. Operating the business divisions of Norco Foods and Norco Rural Retail / Agribusiness, Norco is a quality manufacturer, wholesaler and retailer of a range of dairy products including milk and ice cream, a retailer of a diverse range of agricultural products and a manufacturer of stockfeeds.
